BA5 hosted by The Marine Farming Association

Join us for drinks and nibbles at our first Business After 5 (BA5) of 2020 hosted by The Marine Farming Association (MFA). 

MFA is a subscription based organisation representing salmon, oyster and mussel growers across the top of the South. The association turned professional in 1991, to help small growers navigate the murky waters of the newly minted Resource Management Act and secure consents to develop marine farms in the Marlborough Sounds. Today, the association continues in its advocacy role, works closely with Local and Central Government on legislative issues, promotes environmental best practice and supports a number of community initiatives.

The future of aquaculture in New Zealand is bright, with global demand for sustainably produced protein ever increasing, and only 0.2% of our coastline currently utilised. Central Government has recognised the potential of our ‘blue economy’ and set an ambitious target of $3b in annual sales by 2035. MFA President Jonathan Large will highlight how this goal can be achieved and touch on the concept of social license. MFA General Manager Ned Wells will talk about some of the interesting projects the association is managing here in Marlborough.

Come along and learn about some of the challenges and opportunities in aquaculture, what’s in store for 2020 and check out our new office space.
