An Overview of Marlborough's Economy

Join us for afternoon tea with Mayor John Leggett and Brad Olsen, Senior Economist at Infometrics. The Infometrics data gives you valuable insights into the Marlborough economy as well as the national picture, and it is used to inform Council for planning and by the wider community too.

Mayor John Leggett will discuss the positive signals visible in the local economy – growth in wine, aquaculture, visitor economy house building whilst noting some of the challenges we face including labour and skills shortages, recovery from the earthquake etc.

Brad Olsen will provide members with an overview of Marlborough’s economy along with a discussion of the potential opportunities and challenges facing the region. Brad will detail the strength of the Marlborough economy over 2018, talking specifically about broad growth in employment and earning potential, and focusing on several key sectors which have expanded over the last year.

He will then delve into more recent trends in the area, such as retail spending and tourism indicators, and the current opportunities and challenges for the local economy to consider. As part of this, he will take a step back and discuss the national economic outlook over the next five years, with linkages back to how Marlborough can best position itself.

Finally he will be giving members a sneak peek at some of the regional well-being work that Infometrics will release later in the month.
